Viral marketing buzz blesses boozers

Sun 02 Dec 2007 00:56

Threshers are up to it again! Fancy a 40% discount on your Christmas alcohol bill? Then head over to the Threshers website before the 9th! While you're on your way, contemplate what Threshers were up to this time last year.

In the run-up to Christmas last year, Threshers offered print-off 40% discount vouchers in emails, but claimed that they were only supposed to go to certain people. It triggered a viral email marketing campaign and caused a frenzy of consumers rushing to Threshers stores to take advantage. Whether or not this was an intentional campaign on behalf of Threshers, they significantly increased their sales due to the viral passing on of email vouchers. Nice.

Significance to Internet marketers

A nice example of a company riding off the success of last year's viral effect (intentional or not) without having to use viral marketing this year. The motto? If your business is seasonal your viral marketing could provide enough buzz to carry you through next season too. Careful though, make sure you can afford to trade at the stated discounts to a large customer base!
