Space alien technology or viral marketing campaign?

Tue 20 Nov 2007 23:17

A strange case of alleged alien airborne technology that has been reported around the USA for months - may turn out to be a huge viral marketing campaign.

Reports had been coming in for months, of strange "drones" flying around parts of the USA. Composed of a central ring with various appendages radiating off it - rather like a huge dragonfly - the craft have been reported by alleged eyewitnesses, written about in blogs, photographed and even covered by various experts in UFOlogy. Then in June 2007, the CARET documents emerged from a chap who called himself Isaac. These contained images of a strange set of symbols (observed on the "drones" and clearly visible in photographs), and a description of how they were taken from captured alien technology. These symbols, the document said, could cause the material they are written on to perform certain actions under the right conditions. All very mysterious - the skeptics shouted fake and the believers saw it as a herald to a new understanding of the universe and everything in it.

Then along comes PC manufacturer Alienware and their Area-51 m17x gaming laptop. It has the strange symbols on it's back.

There is now huge speculation that Alienware is behind the reports and photographs in a huge viral marketing campaign although they actually deny it - so the plot thickens. Perhaps the drones are reverse engineered alien technology then.

Significance to Internet marketers

This is an interesting case because there is still uncertainty whether this is a viral campaign or not. Many Internet Marketers have pointed out that if it was, then it was executed poorly, with no mention of the company or product in the CARET documents. Others have mused that implying that the drone case is a viral marketing campaign is a great way to discredit it - something the governments always want to do with extraterrestrial stories.

Alienware claim to have ridden the wave of the CARET phenomenon by incorporating the strange symbols onto their product (food for thought for viral marketers) - rather than instigating a viral marketing campaign. If this is the case then they might end up paying royalties to the aliens.

If nothing else this story may help the potential viral marketer to think outside the box.
